What is discipleship?

When many people hear the word “disciple”, they think of a student learning under a teacher. However the Biblical picture of a disciple is much more all-consuming and relational. The disciples of Jesus were not just people who learned information ABOUT Him, but rather, people who were in relationship WITH Him.

A disciple of Christ aims to truly know Him–becoming one with Jesus, imitating His life, adopting His values and ultimately reproducing His teachings. To be a true disciple, we must commit ourselves completely to our relationship with the Lord so that we can become just like Him. We do this by spending time in His Word, spending time in prayer, learning to hear and follow the Holy Spirit, spending time in Godly community and learning under righteous and anointed leadership.

Discipleship equips you. Discipleship empowers you. Discipleship positions you to receive the blessings of God. Discipleship re-wires you to be able to rightly relate to God and rightly relate to others. But engaging in discipleship is an ongoing choice–will you continue to choose to be transformed by God?

Why is ongoing discipleship important?

Discipleship is a journey of “becoming”; a lifelong process we must prioritize above all things if we desire to be made holy as He is holy. In John 8:31 Jesus makes it clear that accepting Him and believing in Him are good–but if you continue in Him you become a “true disciple”.

True disciples continue to grow in spiritual maturity. True disciples are those whom the Lord can trust and use for His glory. Here at Online Church, we are focused on making true disciples.

We believe that discipleship and practical training, as well as spaces for corporate deliverance, healing and prayer are key for every believer. We hold weekly Zoom gatherings to meet these needs, so mark your calendar, grab your Bible and join us!
